......Founded in 1687,the City of Poughkeepsie is located midway between New York City and Albany, the state capitol, on the east side of the Hudson River, which recently has been declared by the President of the United States to be a National Heritage Area. Poughkeepsie is a small city with a Year 2000 population of just under 30,000 and a total land area of just 4.8 square miles. It is surrounded on three sides by the Town of Poughkeepsie and on the west by the majestic Hudson River.
......Poughkeepsie is known as the Queen City on the Hudson. Its logo is a beehive with many bees buzzing around, reflective of the hard-working nature of the people of the City. The name Poughkeepsie is derived from Native Americans. While there are numerous interpretations of what the name meant in Indian tongue, almost all the suggested meanings focus on Poughkeepsie’s location by a water body.
......Poughkeepsie has a long and important history in New York State. The courthouse on Market Street in the heart of downtown Poughkeepsie is where New York ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788. Early in its history, the City was a major center for whale rendering, followed by breweries along the banks of the Hudson, some of them owned by Matthew Vassar, the founder of the renowned Vassar College here in Poughkeepsie. Today major employers are government, medical, service, retail and light manufacturing.
......Poughkeepsie is centrally located in the Hudson Valley with excellent rail service (and expanded parking) to both New York City and south, and Albany north. By car, the city can be reached via the Thruway or Taconic State Parkway. The City is served by a bus system and has a pedestrian-friendly downtown. It is the seat of Dutchess County government. Central Hudson Gas & Electric supplies the City’s energy needs and has the cheapest rates in New York State. All of the City is served by municipal waste and water systems.
......Amenities include more than 1_ miles of publicly accessible land along the Hudson River, including two parks and a public boat launch. There are more than a dozen other parks scattered throughout the City that offer such amenities as 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, ball fields and soccer fields, swimming pools, playgrounds and tennis courts.
......Culturally, the Bardavon 1869 Opera House, the oldest continuously operating entertainment venue in New York State, is located downtown on Market Street and is the focus of cultural activities in Poughkeepsie, along with the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, the Cunneen-Hackett Cultural Center housed in a former home of Matthew Vassar, and such music and dance venues as jazz clubs, music halls, dance places, and art galleries located along lower Main Street and Hooker Avenue. A myriad of different taste treats such as nouvelle cuisine, Jamaican, Cajun, Barbecue, Chinese, Italian and traditional American fare, to name but a few, reflect the City’s ethnic diversity and can be found in the many riverfront and downtown restaurants.
......For business, Poughkeepsie offers many winning opportunities, including the ability to purchase and rent business space at considerably below prevailing metropolitan rates, attractive loan packages and Empire Zone tax incentives.
......Major revitalization efforts are underway in Poughkeepsie in three areas – downtown, along the waterfront and on the northside at the City’s prime business park.
......The former pedestrian mall along Main Street – the heart of downtown – was just reopened to vehicular traffic in November 2001 to a great celebration. As a result, there is now seamless two-way traffic from the foot of Main Street at the Hudson River all the way to the Town line. The historic Luckey Platt department store building, in the heart of downtown, is scheduled to be converted to artist live-work space. The 400 block of Main Street has been torn down and is available for redevelopment.
......Major new private investment is slated for 20 acres of the southern waterfront with a mix of restaurants, shops, and a public walkway and boat launch.. This development will compliment the almost one dozen restaurants located near the waterfront that make up the Riverfront Restaurant District. The City’s most popular waterfront park, Waryas Park, at the foot of Main Street has undergone a major overhaul, with a new bulkhead recently installed and extension of the waterfront walkway underway. A partnership between the City and the community is the basis for a major public art project underway at Waryas Park that calls for creation of a mosaic Whale sculpture snaking through the park. This is due for completion in 2002.
......At the Cottage Street Business Park, on the City’s northside, efforts are underway to improve road access as well as water and sewer supply. The City owns a 9 acre parcel in the business park that is available for development whole or subdivided.
......The City of Poughkeepsie is the Queen City on the Hudson for good reason. It has a wide range of housing choices, including many historic homes and districts. It is a good place to do business. Best of all, it has a diverse and friendly population.
